PUB PACKAGED BEER SALE COMPETITION
We have a ton of new awesome packaged beer coming up soon, as well as our usual favorites, and now is a great time to let your guests know about our awesome options. The packaged beer contest starts on Wednesday, 12/18 and will run through Tuesday, 12/24. If you only work a couple days a week, don’t fear – we will calculate winners based on packaged beer sales per hours worked over the week so every server has a chance to win! Here are the details:
All pre-packaged beer counts toward the contest. Growlers and crowlers will not be counted.
All staff working server shifts are eligible. Bar shift sales will not be counted, since many guests automatically go to the bar to purchase packaged beer.
Prizes are as follows:
1st place: Two tickets to one of the next Community Table events at the Tap Room! You’ll get to enjoy an awesome curated dinner with special beer.
2nd place: A $50 Block 15 gift card (can be used at the Tap Room & Caves as well)
3rd place: A $25 Block 15 gift card (can be used at the Tap Room & Caves as well)
The best way to win this contest is to point out the packaged beer menu and talk to your tables about our available options – easy peasy! Have fun!
DISHPIT MUSIC POLICY
Dishwashers can listen to music that is separate from the regular restaurant music only on the music device supplied by Block 15 – personal music devices are not allowed. The dishwasher must be able to respond to calls from the kitchen, so therefore must leave volume at an appropriate level and leave one ear uncovered. SWEET NEW MERCH
We are going to be getting in some dope AF flannels in a few weeks! In order to ensure that we order enough for employees, we will have a pre-sale going on so we can approximate how many we’ll need in addition to the ones we’ll offer publicly. You’ll still be allowed to buy them once they are in-house, however if you are interested please pre-order so we have an idea of how many to get! Also by pre-ordering, you will receive the shirt at cost, so considerably cheaper than if you waited until they were in-house!
There str both unisex and women’s cuts, and they will come in two colors (heather grey and charcoal grey).
You can pre-order on the employee store (password: thefablab). Pre-orders need to be submitted by Sunday night (12/15). Please reach out to Seth with any questions!

CAMERON MERRILL’S LEGACY TOY DRIVE INFORMATION
When: December 1st-December 20th, 2019
Where: Block 15’s downtown pub
What you need to know:
We are holding the 7th annual Cameron Merrill’s Legacy Toy Drive in-house during the month of December to benefit sick children in the pediatric ICU at Doernbecher’s and Randall’s Children’s Hospitals. We got involved with this project when a local OSU professor named Cressey Merrill approached us. His family suffered a huge loss in 2013 when their 2 year old son Cameron succumbed to Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. To help them cope with their own grief and continue Cameron’s legacy, the Merrill family has been incredibly proactive with fundraising designed to help other families with sick kids. The charities involved with the collection are Sparrow Clubs and Candlelighters For Kids With Cancer.
The Merrill family is well known in the community due to Cressey’s position teaching SCUBA diving at OSU and through the Eugene Dive Shop. We are excited to help support them in their fundraising efforts. We will be accepting NEW and UNWRAPPED toys for children of all ages. We will also accept cash donations which we will turn into toys. We will have a log available to track all cash donations at the bar. Any taxable donations should be made through the websites of the associated charities – Candlelighters For Kids With Cancer or Sparrow Clubs.
Every single donation will go to local children and will make the holidays brighter for families in need.
Cressey and members of the Block 15 staff will be personally delivering the toys to Doernbecher and Randall, and Block 15 staff and the Merrill family will be teaming up to shop for toys with any cash donations. We encourage you to participate in any way possible, even if it just means helping to spread the word! Thank you for helping us honor Cameron’s legacy and lend support to families in our community.
PRODUCTION BREWERY TOURS
By the end of January, we are requiring all FOH and BOH staff (from all locations) to attend a production brewery tour. On Monday, December 2nd (the day of our holiday party) we will be offering four tours (at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, & 2pm) and there will be house shifts available for you to sign up for. If you are unable to sign up for one of those shifts, please be aware that you will be required to attend a regularly scheduled public tour (5pm on Fridays or 2pm on Saturdays) to fulfill your attendance. Your attendance will be paid. Please sign up for one of those tours here. And feel free to ask Paige with questions!
100% FOOD FEEDBACK
Going forward, you will able to fill out your 100% food feedback both in-person and online! Feel free to fill out your feedback via this form if it is easier for you or more convenient. This link will live on the Internal Brewsletter landing page next to the Staff Provisions link. And as always, please be constructive and helpful!

LEGION OF FUN — DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Server Edition: Pub
We have 49 FoH staff members, some here for 11+ years and some awesome new faces! Every month through our FoH Education program we are able to talk at length about the nuances of wild & sour beers, the different flavor profiles in hops, how to create a delicious and balanced cocktail, as well as ways that we as a restaurant and as a community can live and work with sustainability in mind — and much more! Serving can be the face of the restaurant, but we are tasked with much more than customer service. When it comes to cleaning projects, side work, helping out our BOH peeps, or doing dishes, we try to play our part in keeping the restaurant going.
This Department Highlight series will feature a fun Q&A with each department. For this series, check out Round #1 (questions asked by Julia) and Round #2 (asked by Fabian) and learn a little bit more about some of our awesome Pub servers!
PUB NEW MENU DISCOUNTS
As you all know, staff members get a 100% discount on new food items as long as you constructively review that item as well. Since the Pub has added/changed some food items as of today, the following items will be eligible for a 100% discount from 11/20 through 12/3:

MENU CHANGE DETAILS
Here are basic instructions for how to ring items in with modifiers as indicated on the menu. This info is posted in the kitchen and at all the server stations as well for your reference!
When grilling mushrooms, do not use butter anymore - we will sub canola oil instead.
All tempeh is now deep-fried. It only needs to go down for a minute or so, just enough to heat it up and crisp the outside.
Pub greens will no longer get bread on it. Full-sized entree salads will get the 1/2 ale.
Our new menu will now have icons that identify vegetarian, vegan, and made without gluten items. There will also be icons that state whether an item is easily modified to accommodate one of those dietary needs.
We are intentionally changing our wording from “GLUTEN FREE” to “MADE WITHOUT GLUTEN.” We feel more comfortable calling out items as “made without gluten” vs “gluten free” as we are not a gluten free establishment and the phrase implies that there is certainly no trace of gluten in the item. Continue to use the same language with guests as we have in the past stating we cannot guarantee items are 100% free from gluten.
Mac Mondays will no longer be a thing, as we have added TWO macs to our static menu! We will likely rotate the ingredients in the loaded mac every few months but will always have the standard sharp cheddar mac available. Mondays will now just be a free day for daily specials.
We will now have Daiya brand vegan cheddar cheese available! It may be substituted at no extra charge for any cheese. We can also make vegan nachos with it! It is a shredded cheddar cheese.
Ale bread and butter will now be served instead of garlic bread! ½ a loaf will be served with salads and pastas.
ALL feta in house will be an Alsea Acres blend! YUM
We now have buttermilk fried onions as a burger add on and they are replacing grilled onions on the BBQ burger and the Bleu Bacon burger. We will still have grilled onions as an option too!
Our Tempeh Mushroom grinder’s sauce is a black pepper spread that is made from vegan mayonnaise. This is a great sauce to use for folks looking for a vegan mayo or sauce for a sandwich! This sandwich will be easily made vegan by simply substituting vegan cheddar for the swiss.
ITEMS WE WILL NO LONGER HAVE:
BMT (will be on the secret menu)
Shiitake Mushroom Po’boy
Southwest Burger (will be on the secret menu)
HB&J Burger
Kid Quesadilla
Kid HB&J
Smoked Cheddar
Smoked Hazelnuts
Smoked Salmon Mousse
Strawberry Fields Salad
Garlic Cream Linguine
Chicken Chipotle Pasta
Pub Steak Sandwich
Avocado

UPDATE TO SICK LEAVE POLICY
As a way to support our employees in time of challenges, we wanted to develop a policy that allowed for donation of additional paid sick time in the event an employee needed additional time. The other limits of the Sick Leave plan still apply. If you have questions, please reach out to Chris Heuchert.
The following paragraph has been added to the Sick Leave policy:
Requesting Donation of Sick Time: An employee who needs additional time off for a personal illness, medical emergency, or maternity leave, or family member’s illness, medical emergency or death may submit a request via email to the General Manager asking for approval to be included in the Leave Donation Program. The General Manager may ask for documentation of the need in the process of evaluating eligibility for the program. The employee must exhaust their previously earned Sick Time balance prior to requesting donated leave, and any leave hours received via donation must be used in connection with the approved need. The approved employee is not allowed to directly ask any employee to donate PTO hours, any hours will be received anonymously.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PRESENTATION
We recently sponsored the OSU "Out of the Darkness" walk to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. As part of our sponsorship, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has graciously offered to hold a bystander intervention class for our staff. This presentation teaches the signs of suicidal thinking, how to intervene with a friend or loved one, and what resources are available to help. Suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for Americans ages 15-24 years old, and this is a unique opportunity for you to learn skills to prepare yourself to both support a loved one or care for your own mental health.
Here are the details:
What: Bystander Intervation Training for Suicide Prevention
When: Wednesday, November 6 from 10-11:30am (presentation is about 90 minutes)
Where: Block 15 Game Room
Who: Any Block 15/Caves staff can attend - however, we do have limited seating. Please let Katy know if you would like to attend, and she will schedule you. You will be paid to attend this, and if you're a FOH person, you can attend this class in lieu of a regular education class in November.
Why: While we hope you never need these skills, we care about you and want you to be well-prepared and have the proper resources available to you if you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts.
If you have any questions or want to reserve a spot, please email Katy via HotSchedules or Katy@Block15.com.
Thank you all for always taking care of each other!

You also may have already seen on social media that the artwork for the upcoming bottle release beers are different. This is intentional, as we want to make things a bit more cohesive, and a bit simpler. Please relay that to any customers that inquire as to why we’ve changed up the artwork. THE LEGION OF FUN PRESENTS….
BLIND TASTING SERIES
Come one, come all to the Tap Room or the Pub to be given beer…while blindfolded!
From Monday, October 7th to Sunday, October 13th, come into either the Tap Room or the Pub to taste select beers and then guess what those beers actually are! You’ll be given a sheet of paper to turn in where you list your answers. The winner will be announced on Monday, October 14th (the Monday after it starts). If there is more than one winner, we will have a showdown…winner take all...and by all we mean a gift from the goody drawer. 😉
Instructions to Serving Staff:
Pub Bartenders: Goody will give you a list of beers that you will pour for people throughout the week. Don’t forget to have them wear the blindfold when you’re pouring, we don’t want any lookie-loos!
Tap Room Staff: You will be given the list of what to pour by Keke. Again, don’t forget to have the people wear the blindfolds while pouring!
For Pub Bartenders or Tap Room Staff, to participate just go to the other location (i.e. Pub➡Tap Room, Tap Room➡Pub).
Please only submit one entry from one location. That way everyone has a fair shot at winning!
Also feel free to share your taster flight with someone who is already there and also wants to participate. Less glassware=less dishes=helping out the earth! If you have any questions, please let Julia know via HotSchedules.
Lastly - we would like to thank our very own Dylan Prentiss for this idea! Thanks Dylan, you rock!

LEGION OF FUN
As most of you probably saw, Julia sent out a HotSchedules message about the newly created fun committee - Legion of Fun! In the interest of making sure everyone is aware, though, below is her note, in addition to a committee list/breakdown so you know who to go to if you have ideas!
“Hey all!
So the Legion of Fun is officially underway. And we want to invite you all to be able to participate when you want! We want your voices, opinions, thoughts, and anything else you feel like providing when it comes to team work. So we decided to our fun books at all 3 locations so you guys can write in it and we can try and implement your ideas too!
So these are their locations:
A Gold sparkly Fun Book lives on the cork board at the pub.
The pink sparkly Fun Book will live on the rack left of the shoe station at Caves.
And the Black diamond Fun Book will live by the rest of the logs (the beer log, olcc,, etc, under the bar) at the Tap room.
PLEASE show each other where these live, because I know we all don’t know these places like the back of our hand. I want you all to feel encouraged to write in these and we will fallow up with you and your ideas!
Thanks all.
Let the good times roll.
Júlia”
Here are the LoF representatives and their respective departments:
Julia - QUEEN OF ALL
Addison - Hosts and Food Runners
Goody - Management FOH
Fabian - Pub Servers
Keke - Tap Room FOH
Rachel - Caves FOH
Adrian - Pub, Caves, and Tap Room BOH
Paulie - Management and Pub BOH
Tivey - Prep and Tap Room BOH
Danny - Pub and Production Brewery
Matt Larsen - Distro and Production Brewery
We want people to reach out with ideas and questions, and should feel encouraged to do so, and we want them to know their respective representative!
CLIMATE JUSTICE MARCH & RALLY
Just a reminder that this Friday, September 27th is the Climate Justice March & Rally! A crew from Block 15 will be meeting at the Pub at 2:30pm.
Block 15 & Caves will compensate any employee (at their current hourly rate) for their time participating in the March & Rally. We ask that all employees wear a Block 15 or Caves shirt to identify ourselves as a cohesive, sustainably minded group! Please be aware that if you are scheduled but want to participate in either event, you must take the proper routes to getting your shift (or part of it) covered accordingly.
If you would like to participate MEET AT THE PUB AT 2:30. We will then walk as a group to 9th & Madison to join other community members. The march will start at 3pm and last for about 25 minutes.
Join the March and Rally to show how many in our community want a just transition to a livable future for all of human society!
Additionally, here is a link to a pretty informative checklist on Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint!
BLOCK 15 TAILGATE + BEAVER FOOTBALL GAME
We are raffling off a handful of tickets for some lucky employees to the OSU vs. Utah game Saturday, October 12th (time of game TBD)! If your name is selected, you will receive one ticket and will also be invited to a Block 15 tailgate at Reser Stadium before kickoff (time of tailgate will depend on the start of the game)!
To enter your name in the raffle, please fill out this form. One entry per person please.
The deadline to enter your name in the raffle is Tuesday, October 1st at 5pm, which will give time for scheduling managers to schedule accordingly.
Tailgate will include:
- Games (corn hole, can jam, arcade basketball, etc.)
- Food (nacho bar, oysters, sausages, pulled pork sandos, cookies)
- Delicious beer!
-And other sweet tailgating things!
Good luck, and GO BEAVS!
BLOCKING HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS
In general, let’s try to stay aware of blocking high traffic areas at all three of our locations, regardless if you’re working or not. Areas like around the Pub host stand/entrance to kitchen, the Tap Room bus station, the hallway to the restrooms/kitchen/employee area at Caves, and any stairwells should not be a place to congregate in. Try to make your fellow-coworkers lives easier by not being in the way!

YOU OUGHTA KNOW!
CLIMATE ACTION WEEK
As you know, Block 15 take its footprint on this earth seriously. Climate change is a critical issue and our sustainability plan is always evolving, as we constantly search for unique and effective ways to create the highest quality beer and food in a more sustainable manner.
It was brought to Kristen A.’s attention by our very own Caves line cook, Sierra Absher, that September 20th-27th marks Climate Action Week. Sierra took the time to present her with information and ideas on how Block 15 could get involved in our community (thanks Sierra!). The Corvallis Climate Action Alliance has organized a Climate Justice March & Rally on Friday, September 27th, and we’re going to get involved!
There are two ways to get involved, and you can do either:
Come make some posters with us!
Block 15 is hosting a pre-march and rally poster-making event this Sunday, September 22nd from 2-4pm in the Barrel Room at the Tap Room. Materials, food, and drinks will be provided. This is a great way to hang out with co-workers with free food and beverages while supporting a super important issue!March & Rally with us!
Block 15 & Caves will compensate any employee (at their current hourly rate) for their time participating in the March & Rally on Friday, September 27th. We ask that all employees wear a Block 15 or Caves shirt to identify ourselves as a cohesive, sustainably minded group! Please be aware that if you are scheduled but want to participate in either event, you must take the proper routes to getting your shift (or part of it) covered accordingly.
March & Rally Details - Friday, September 27th
2:45 pm: Gather at meeting locations (for us, Block 15 Pub)
3:00 pm: Marches begin
3:45 pm: Rally Starts at Riverfront Park
5:00 pm: Disperse
The three marches will converge at the Riverfront Park. Expect to march approximately 25 minutes. Marchers are encouraged to make their own signs for the march and rally. Fighting the climate breakdown is about much more than emissions and scientific metrics – it’s about fighting for a just and sustainable world that works for everyone. If we are going to fight for this, we need everyone. Join the March and Rally to show how many in our community want a just transition to a livable future for all of human society!
For more information, visit their web site!
If you’re interested in adding the pre-march/rally poster making event, please RSVP here so we can have an idea of how many people to expect!

Over the past few weeks, Julia (with Kristen A.’s support) has been spearheading a team building/fun committee (official name TBD) for both Block 15 and Caves! BLOKTOBERFEST PRE-SALE PACKAGES
We are going to be selling pre-sale packages for Bloktoberfest this year, and they will go live within the next day or so!
The main package will be $35 and include entry ($5 value), choice of mug (either the 1L glass mug or .5L ceramic mug) and $25 in $5 gift cards.
Additional items can be pre-purchased as well:
2019’s Bloktoberfest t-shirt - $15 (choice of either charcoal or teal)
Additional $5 gift cards - $30 worth of cards for $25
We’re hoping that this will encourage people to pre-buy entrance, mugs, and $5 gift cards and help expedite the lines inside the tent. Pre-purchased items can be picked up at the main tent entrance on whichever day the customer decides to attend the fest.
Packaged can be purchased here, and we’re limiting the main entrance package to 200 so we can ensure we don’t run out of mugs before the fest has even started!
Please feel free to let me (Paige) know if you have any questions!!
STAFF PIC(K)S SERIES
The Marketing department is rolling out a new social media series called “Staff Pic(k)s.” Once a month Kevin will randomly choose a staff member from any of our three locations to talk about their favorite beer or their current go-to beer, and just chat in general! The feature will then get put up on our Instagram and Facebook.
If you’re interested in being part of the series, feel free to email Kevin to let him know!

BLOKTOBERFEST 2019
Bloktoberfest dates were officially announced last week, both internally and publicly. We are still waiting on some of the finer details of Bloktoberfest, so the Facebook event and the web page (block15.com/bloktoberfest) will be continuously getting updated over the next few weeks as those details get finalized. Please visit the Facebook/web page periodically to ensure you are up to date on all the relevant information.
For example, the volunteer sign-up link went live today for folks to sign up for volunteer shifts. We also posted a teaser of this year’s ceramic .5L mugs!
FLICKER VIDEO SHOOT
The Marketing team is planning a Flicker promotional video shoot up at Mary’s Peak Campground next Wednesday, September 4th and they need some bodies! The exact details are TBD (they’ll be sent out in a HotSchedules message in the next few days) but keep it on your radar if you’re interested in participating - you’ll even get to taste Flicker before it’s even released! This is not a paid event, it’s just voluntary if you want to come hang out in the woods and help the Marketing team out. Again, stay tuned for more details!
BEND BREWFEST HONOR
Two weekends ago Block 15 attended the Bend Brewfest over in Bend, OR and had a great time. Every year the Fest has a People’s Choice award, and we won it this year for The Dab Lab, Desert High! We beat out 200 other beers, and join the ranks of Fort George, Sunriver and Goodlife, who are all past winners. Go team!
SAFETY COMMITTEE
The Safety Committee is looking for 2 more people to join the crew (it's an OSHA requirement that we have the committee and have meetings) Ideally they are looking for a FOH person that works both the Tap Room and the Pub, and then a Prep person who works at the Pub. However, any interested party who wants to stay safe AF and has a keen eye for things that need to be addressed at either location is welcome. The meetings are once a month, usually at the Pub, and are only for about 15 minutes or so.
If you’re interested, please let Sean Jolley know (sean@block15.com).

*This release is going to be kind of an odd one - because there’s 4 beers being released, we wanted to try and streamline it as much as possible. So, these beers will be released at both the Tap Room and the Pub on each day in the interest of menu printing, button making, transfers, etc. Technically the Oud Bruin is the monthly offering, but we will be selling it at the Pub as well (even though most other Monthly Releases are Tap Room only).
