GENERAL
Block 15 Tap Room Goes Solar!
Sustainability and reliance on reusable resources have been pillars that Block 15 Brewing has stood upon since day one. And we are thrilled to announce our biggest sustainability project yet! Beginning in December we will begin installation of solar panels, covering the roof at our Tap Room, providing nearly 40% of the facility’s power needs. The installation is the next project in Solarize Corvallis, a joint initiative by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition and the Oregon Clean Power Cooperative, whose goal is to install large solar arrays throughout Corvallis, with Block 15 Brewing being the first private business to participate in the program.
The project reaches far beyond Corvallis, by allowing beer lovers and clean energy supporters anywhere in Oregon to invest in the project. In a unique approach to financing solar, the project will combine funds from Block 15, Oregon residents and Energy Trust of Oregon to pay for the project. Anyone living in Oregon will be able to buy shares of stock in the project (including Block 15 employees), an approach the Oregon Clean Power Co-op has used to successfully finance solar projects throughout Oregon (https://oregoncleanpower.coop/projects/). Block 15 will fund about two-thirds of the project, an Energy Trust of Oregon solar incentive will contribute about 10%, and the remaining 25% will come from investment by community members, who will get paid back over ten years from the project’s energy savings.
For more information on the project, please click ‘learn more’ to find out more.

Brews For New Avenues 10th Anniversary
This week’s release of We All Need To Do Better has a story behind it worth sharing. This coming Saturday, Brews For New Avenues is hosting their (sold-out) 10th Anniversary pouring and auction event in Portland. Block 15 was invited to participate in the event by being 1 of 10 national breweries to collaborate with a minority-owned brewery. We had the pleasure of creating a Black Currant Saison with Full Circle Brewing, from Fresno, California, that will be pouring at the event!
Proceeds from the sales of this beer will be split between New Avenues for Youth, that provides assistance to homeless youth, and Black is Beautiful. Now in it’s second year, the Black is Beautiful initiative is aimed to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily.
For more information on both efforts, please check out the links below:
TAP ROOM UPDATES
When customers are ordering drinks in line and directly from the bar, let’s make sure to pour those as they are ordered and don’t let them leave without their drink. I know sometimes it seems like it is easier to try and push through the line and bring them to the table, but then the tickets pile up and it makes all of our other drink times go up.
We will be releasing some fun cellar bottles from previous years starting next week for people to buy and stock up on for Holiday festivities.
PUB UPDATES
Hosts - When seating/notifying Widget-added folks on the waitlist, we should always aim to get as close to their quoted time as possible. Unless the Widget-added guest has already checked in at the host stand, we should focus on seating/notifying guests that are on site or physically put their name on the waitlist. Oftentimes, folks adding themselves to the waitlist via the Widget will still need time to travel and are anticipating their table not being ready until their quoted time. When we page someone 15 minutes into their 30-minute quote, they may not be here for another 15 minutes and we don’t want to leave those tables open for longer than 5 minutes. This may mean that the Widget added guest may need to wait for 5 minutes once they arrive, and that is okay. Please check in with a manager if you have any questions!
A quick reminder that the outside planters now only need one deep watering (about ¾ of a bucket per planter) a week. This is on the Host/Food Runner list and should happen each Sunday afternoon.
BEER EDUCATION
This Friday at noon, Tom Shellhammer from Oregon State’s Fermentation Science Department will be talking about sustainability in the brewing industry, highlighting some recent work from the Shellhammer Lab on this topic. Spend 20 minutes learning about how hop kilning and dry-hopping practices impact the sustainability of this important brewing raw material.
NEW STAFF!
Please give these new folks a hearty welcome when you see them!
